Oil Pump: Inspection

  1. INSPECT OIL JET

Check the oil jet for damage or clogging. If necessary, replace the cylinder block.

  2. INSPECT RELIEF VALVE

Coat the valve with engine oil and check that it falls smoothly into the valve hole by its own weight.

If it does not, replace the relief valve. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.

  3. INSPECT DRIVE AND DRIVEN ROTORS

    1. Place the drive and driven rotors into the oil pump body. (See REASSEMBLY )
    2. Inspect for the tip clearance.

Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the drive and driven rotor tips.

Fig 3: Measuring Clearance Between Drive And Driven Rotor Tips Using Feeler Gauge

      1. Standard tip clearance:
      2. 0.080 - 0.160 mm (0.0031 - 0.0063 in.)
      3. Maximum tip clearance: 0.35 mm (0.0138 in.)

If the tip clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotors as a set.

    3. Inspect for the side clearance.
      1. Using a feeler gauge and precision straight edge, measure the clearance between the rotors and precision straight edge.
      2. Fig 4: Measuring Clearance Between Rotors & Precision Straight Edge Using Feeler Gauge & Precision Straight Edge

      3. Standard side clearance:
      4. 0.030 - 0.085 mm (0.0012 - 0.0033 in.)
      5. Maximum side clearance: 0.16mm (0.0063 in.)

If the side clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotors as a set. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.

    4. Inspect for the body clearance.
      1. Using a feeler gauge, measure the clearance between the driven rotor and body.
      2. Fig 5: Measuring Clearance Between Driven Rotor & Body Using Feeler Gauge

      3. Standard body clearance:
      4. 0.100 - 0.170 mm (0.0039 - 0.067 in.)
      5. Maximum body clearance: 0.325 mm (0.0128 in.)

If the body clearance is greater than maximum, replace the rotors as a set. If necessary, replace the oil pump assembly.

  4. INSPECT OIL PUMP DRIVE CHAIN AND OIL PUMP SPROCKETS
    1. Using vernier calipers, measure the length of the 8 links with the chain dully stretched.
Fig 6: Measuring Length Of Links With Chain Dully Stretched Using Vernier Calipers

      1. Maximum chain elongation: 52.4 mm (2.063 in.)

If the elongation is greater than maximum, replace the chain.

NOTE: Make the same measurements pulling at 3 or more places selected at random.
    2. Wrap the chain around the oil pump sprocket.
    3. Using vernier calipers, measure the sprocket diameter with the chain.
    4. Fig 7: Measuring Sprocket Diameter With Chain Using Vernier Calipers

NOTE: Vernier calipers must contact the chain rollers for measuring
    1. Minimum sprockets diameter (w/ chain):
    2. 48.2 mm(1.898 in.)

If the diameter is less than minimum, replace the chain and 2 sprockets.

  5. INSPECT CHAIN TENSIONER PLATE
Fig 8: Inspecting Chain Tensioner Plate

Measure the chain tensioner plate wear.

    1. Maximum wear: 0.5 mm (0.020 in.)

If the wear is greater than maximum, replace the chain tensioner plate.
