Front Axle Differential Lock, Removing
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Socket And Extended Bit :T10107A
- Torque Wrench 1331 5-50Nm :VAG1331
-- Turn off the ignition.
The right drive axle must be removed later in the procedure.
-- With the vehicle still standing on its wheels, loosen the front collar bolt -arrow- a maximum of 90°. Otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION .
-- If available, remove drive axle heat shield -arrows-. Refer to DRIVE AXLE .
-- Remove the right drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Risk of damaging the decoupling element.
- Pay attention to EXHAUST PIPES/MUFFLERS .
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe from the engine and tie it up. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER .
-- Remove connector -arrow- from Axle Differential Lock Control Module -J647-.
-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Oil Level Thermal Sensor -G266-.
-- Remove the pendulum support from the transmission. Refer to OVERVIEW - SUBFRAME MOUNT .
-- Install two bolts into the flange and counterhold the flange shaft with a tire iron to remove the right flange shaft bolt with a Socket.
-- Remove the upper bolts -arrows- that attach the front axle differential lock to the manual transmission.
-- Remove the lower bolts -arrows- that attach the front axle differential lock to the manual transmission.
-- Push the engine/transmission to the front a little bit (a second technician is needed).
-- Carefully push the front axle differential lock off the manual transmission and remove it.
- Prevent connectors -arrow- from becoming damaged (illustrated here with front axle differential lock installed).
-- Note the transportation of the front axle differential lock. Refer to FRONT AXLE DIFFERENTIAL LOCK, TRANSPORTING .
