Removal & Installation

  1. On 5-door (wagon) models, fold up front floor hatch. Remove 4 floor hatch screws and pull hatch forward. See Fig 1. Fold up mat and drop rear seat down. Go to step  4.
  2. On 4-door models, fold right rear seat forward.
  3. CAUTION: Secure fuel tank with safety stand before strap bolts are removed.
  4. On 4-door models, remove trunk mat and remove or fold right wheel housing panel (depends on model variant). See Fig 2.
  5. On all models, release fuel pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE.
  6. Remove cover above fuel pump collar. Disconnect fuel pump connector. Noting installed position for reassembly reference, carefully disconnect quick-release couplings on delivery and return lines using Fuel Line Wrench (999 5666). See Fig 3. Fuel delivery line should have yellow mark to correspond with yellow mark on pump.
  7. WARNING: If fuel pump is removed for a long period of time, reinstall fuel pump collar to avoid tank swelling. If collar is not reinstalled, it may be difficult to install at a later time.
  8. Noting installed position of pump, remove fuel pump collar using Fuel Pump Wrench (999 5485). See Fig 4. Lift out fuel pump. Remove rubber seal.
  9. To install, reverse removal procedure. Lightly grease feed and return line connections with petroleum jelly. Feed line is marked with yellow to correspond with mark on pump. Use a new gasket. Fuel pump fitting should
  10. Fuel pump should be fitted with the heater connection (if equipped) facing to the right. See Fig 5.
  11. Tighten fuel pump nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS. Reinstall interior trim panels.
