Remove/Install Ignition Lock Control Cable: Notes

Remove/Install 

  1. 1 -  Remove selector lever handle. See REMOVE/INSTALL SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE WITH COVERING .
  2. 2 -  Remove selector cover (1) at selector lever. See Fig 1.
  3. 3 -  Cover the selector lever gate of the electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5) with a cloth. See Fig 2.
    CAUTION: If objects can enter into the electronic selector lever module control unit, it can be damaged.
  4. 4 -  Remove ashtray housing (2) at center console. See REMOVE/INSTALL ASHTRAY HOUSING FROM FRONT CENTER CONSOLE .
  5. 5 -  Withdraw key from EIS control unit (N73).
    NOTE: Key cannot be withdrawn.
    NOTE: Vehicles with Keyless-Go Code 889: press Start/Stop button repeatedly until ignition is switched off.
  6. 6.1 -  Remove stowage compartment with switch panel (3) except CD changer behind switch panel code 819a. See REMOVE/INSTALL CENTER STOWAGE COMPARTMENT .
  7. 6.2 -  Remove CD changer with installation frame with CD changer behind switch panel code 819a. See REMOVING & INSTALLING CD CHANGER .
  8. 7.1 -  On vehicles with COMMAND operating and display system code 352a, remove operating/display unit with control unit . See REMOVE & INSTAL COMMAND OPERATING, DISPLAY & CONTROL UNIT .
  9. 7.2 -  Remove radio. See REMOVE/INSTALL RADIO .
  10. 8 -  Unlatch cable (4) of ignition switch at electronic selector lever module control unit (N15/5).
    NOTE: Lift locking shackle (4b) and press clutch (4c) against the spring load in the electronic selector module control unit (N15/5), twist clutch (4c) around 90° and detach cable (4) of ignition switch.
  11. 9 -  Expose cable (4) of ignition switch.
    NOTE: Take out sound deadening mat and slightly lift air guide duct (5).
  12. 10 -  Remove left cover below dashboard. See REMOVE/INSTALL COVER BELOW INSTRUMENT PANEL (LEFT) .
  13. 11 -  Detach air guide duct (6) in the driver footwell at air distribution box and swing to the side.
  14. 12 -  Unscrew rosette (7) at electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) with claw-type wrench (210 589 00 07 00). See Fig 3.
  15. 13 -  Take electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) out of the instrument panel.
    NOTE: DO NOT unplug electrical plug sockets at EIS control unit.
  16. 14 -  Press together locking shackles (4a) and press out cable (4) of ignition switch at electronic ignition switch control unit (N73) in direction of arrow. See Fig 1. During Installation:  conduct function test as follows:
    • Selector lever must only be engaged and disengaged in ignition lock position "2" and when brake pedal is pressed out of the position "P".
    • It must only be possible to withdraw the ignition key when the selector lever is in position "P".
  17. 15 -  Take cable (4) of ignition switch out of the instrument panel.

    Pull cable of ignition switch into the driver footwell.

    During Installation:  Observe cable routing.

  18. 16 -  Install in the reverse order.
